Carolers

Carolers singing outside of Mayfield Hall. 1957.

The singing of Christmas carols is a tradition that has long been tied in with the annual Penny Toss. This excerpt from the Rambler sets the scene:

In accordance with an old custom, the students gathered after supper on Thursday evening, December 17, to sing carols.

As they walked over the campus two by two, each with a lighted candle, the girls afforded to onlookers a very picturesque sight. They sang the old--but ever new-- carols, and reminded one of Christmases gone by. Their destination was the court of the Main Building. Here they sang to the faculty who were standing on the balcony above. Their efforts were rewarded by a shower of pennies for which the singers "scrambled" wildly. The ceremony finished with a short speech in which Reverend Mother wished them all "a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year."
